Jill Gatwood

After many years, working as an HIV epidemiologist in New Mexico and the Caribbean, Jill now uses much of her time working on mosaic projects and teaching a variety of mosaic art classes.  She appreciates that mosaic art is not just seen, but can be experienced, touched and felt.  Mosaic art is tactile, participatory and changes with the light and setting.   Its origins trace back to the 3rd millennium BCE, and many astonishingly beautiful mosaics from ancient times still exist and are still being discovered.  Jill’s aim is to live on through the eons via her mosaic creations.

An area of interest for Jill is in repurposing common (no longer functioning) household appliances into works of art that highlight the iconic beauty of their shape and purpose.  She tiles mailboxes, vintage toasters, rotary telephones, coffeemakers, old metal lawn chairs, etc., and hopes to mosaic tile a 1954 Buick someday.
